America Trip 

In 1983, Lalit moved to the United States for higher education. He wanted to study engineering and business administration together. He spent two years at Pace University in New York. Then he moved to Duke University in North Carolina for one year, But Lalit did not complete his degree. He did not graduate from any of these American universities. More seriously, Lalit got into legal trouble in America. In 1985, he was arrested in North Carolina.

The charges were very serious. He was accused of conspiracy to traffic cocaine, kidnapping, and assault. Court documents show that Lalit pleaded guilty to these charges. He admitted to possessing cocaine, false imprisonment, and assault. He received a suspended two-year sentence. He was also put on five years' probation for the drug charges. This dark chapter of his life stayed with him for many years.

Return to India And Family Life 

Lalit returned to India in 1986 after his American troubles. He joined his family's business. He became the executive director of Godfrey Phillips India, a tobacco company. He also became the president and managing director of Modi Enterprises. In 1991, Lalit married Minal Sagrani. His family initially opposed this marriage. But they got married anyway and settled in Mumbai.

Lalit and Minal had two children together. Their son is named Ruchir Modi and their daughter is Aliya Modi.
